#6 Go to Washington DC
I have wanted to go to DC for a long time. It’s just one of those places that I thought I’d like and boy, was I right.
I don’t quite know what the allure was, the backdrop of many a political decision, the backdrop of many a film and TV show, the historical heart of America?
For me, it was so much more than just ticking off a challenge it was realising a dream. Even before I had the city guide book I had a mental tick list of the things I wanted to see from the White House to the Lincoln Memorial. Then there was things I didn’t even know about, or had given much thought to – finding out the origins of the Star Spangled Banner, seeing the first Star Spangled Banner, that were just twists of my trip.
It is safe to say that there is now one big tick next to DC. I’m so glad I just went for it and booked the trip.
In no particular order… here’s what I did
See the White House
Tour the Capitol Building, home of Congress
See protesters outside the Supreme Court
Go to the top of the Old Post Office Tower
Go to the Washington Memorial
Stood where Martin Luther King made his I have a Dream speech
Saw the Lincoln Memorial
Visited Mount Vernon, home of George Washington
Went to my first Basketball game Washington Wizards v Boston Celtics
Nipped to Philadelphia
Went to Independence Hall
Saw the Liberty Bell
Ran up the steps outside the Art Museum a la Rocky
Ate at Ben’s Chilli Bowl (a la Obama)
People watched at Busboys & Poets
Visited the Watergate.

Growing up DC was my favorite city to visit. There’s so much history there, I fell in love instantly. Then…I went to London and fell head over heals in love with London. I’ve decided they are quite comparable and have named DC as my favorite US City and London my favorite city abroad.
